Key Theory 9- Bell Hooks- The Feminist Theory 2

Feminism is a struggle to end patriarchal society  and the dominance of women. She believed that feminism was not a life style choice but a political statement. Race, class and gender all determine the extent to which individuals are exploited and oppressed.

Female stereotypes:

  1. Women are much more emotional than men.
  2. Women are weaker than men.
  3. Women are bossy.
  4. Women have to be skinny in order to be beautiful .
  5. Women have to be conventionally beautiful.
  6. Women are better at being clean and tidy.
  7. Women are not good at sports.
  8. Women are unable to lead a team or be in charge.
  9. Women are shallow.
  10. Women are bad at driving.
  11. Women are see as easy if they have a lot of partners.
  12. Women are passive and do not have a voice in the media.
  13. Women are dependent on men.
  14. Women are motherly and domestic.
  15. Women are romantic and seductive.
  16. Women must marry and have children in order to be successful.
Magazines generate revenue primarily through sales of copies (print and digital) or through advertising. Adverts account for approximately one third of total revenue across the industry. It is therefore, vitally important that the magazine and advertising content target the same audience in order that the advertising brands benefit from increased sales as a result of advertising in the magazine. 

High audience engagement:
  • Less distraction likely from other activities.
  • The ability to target niche audiences.
  • High production value.

Zoella continuously tells us how she 'feels' about the problems she faces. Zoella foregrounds stereotypical female based activities in her presentation: fashion, make-up, relationships. Costume stereotypically feminine- feminine colour palette deployed in mise-en-scene use of pets and pet orientated references (stereotypical little dog).
