Music Video Analysis. (Homework)

Fergie - M.I.L.F. $ (Official Music Video) - YouTube

Who is being represented?
The video entitled "Milf money" (standing for Mother I'd Like To Follow) has been used to represent rich middle aged white women with children as role models for younger women and girls.

How are they being represented?
While the music video is supposed to be one of empowerment for the women, the skimpy outfits and innuendos imply that they are being used as sexual objects to appeal to men.

What is the impact and message of this?
The impact of this message on the audience is far from the empowerment they were aiming for. instead the message is that it is okay for the older women to be fetishised and used to target a wider male audience .

What are the binary opposites in this video?
One opposition that can be see in the video is the empowering message that is meant to be sent by the famous mum's in the video and the sexual imagery seen throughout the music video.

Is the video conventional or unconventional?
In contrast to some of the other videos that I have researched, this video is conventional in the way that it uses women and their bodies to get views. As well as this, the dances that the women are doing in this video are extremely sexualised and they have even shown two women pole dancing at a diner. This combined with the skimpy outfits the women are wearing makes the message of sexualisation even more apparent.

Who is being represented?
In the music video for BB talk, Miley Cyrus and the other dancers who accompany her in the video have attempted to represent infants.

How are they being represented?
While Cyrus tries to represent the innocence of a baby because of the way her boyfriend has been "baby talking." She then contrasts this by using explicit language to send a message to her boyfriend and her audience showing that she is not a child and she doesn't want to be treated as one.

What is the impact and message of this?
The message that I believe Cyrus was trying to send was that she is a grown women and doesn't want to be treated as a baby. Unfortunately, by using explicit language, the impact of the message is less empowering and more of a shock for the audience because of the high contrast between the innocence of a baby compared to the harsh words used.

What are the binary opposites in this video?
The main binary opposite of this video is that Cyrus, an adult, is dress as a baby. On top on this, the innocent representations of the baby contrasts with the explicit lyrics in the song.

Is the video conventional or unconventional?
This video is quiet unconventional although the content of the video has been used to accompany the lyrics and give a visual representation of the way that Miley is feeling.

Who is being represented in this video?
With three gang like groups all betting on one of the greyhounds it could be said that the video has been used to represent those who like racing and the thrill that comes with it.

How are they being represented?
These people have been sectioned off into three groups, each showing their support for one of the race dogs. The groups could almost be a representation of gangs as they clearly have a hatred towards each other at the beginning of the video.

What is the impact and message of this?
The impact of this suggests a feeling of separation and competitiveness between the three groups as they watch the animals race. the message that this sends to the audience is that the race has divided people rather than bringing them together.

What are the binary oppositions in this video?
Some of the binary opposites in this video could be the very open and empty scenery where the race is taking place compared to the more technological and visual busy imagery we see with the three members of the band who are controlling the dogs.

Is the video conventional or unconventional?
I think that the video is conventional of the house music genre because the cuts have been made to fit with the strong beat of the music. As well as this, it could be said that the technological factors included in the video are associated with this genre of music.

This video represents mainly represents women of several different races, ages and styles.

How are they being represented?
The women in the video are being sexualised and have all been shown to be naked or wear tight and skimpy clothing at some point in the music video.

What is the impact and message of this?
The impact of this on the audience is that more men will be attracted to the music video. The producer could have purposefully done this in order to reach a wider audience therefore getting more views, likes and comments on the video.

What are the binary oppositions in this video?
One example of binary opposites in the music video is the contrast between soft and harsh objects such as the guns made out of balloons. the comedic use of the balloons makes the guns much less threatening and adds a sense of fun to the video.

The video is very unconventional and shows a selection of weird and wonderful scenes to accompany the unusual lyrics.

Who is being represented?
While the video could be an empowering message to all who watch it, the group of people who are mainly being represented are those who are a part of the LGBT community.

How are they being represented?
The community are being represented in a positive way as Lady Gaga sings about how everyone is born the way they are and that can not be changed.

What is the impact and message of this?
The impact of this is more support for the LGBT community as they battle for legal equality.

What are he binary oppositions in this video?
One binary opposite that can be noted about the music video and the lyrics is the use of several scenes that show Gaga dressed as a skeleton while singing about being "Born this way." The juxtaposition between life and death could be a metaphor for how desperate the LGBT community are for equal rights.

Is this video conventional or unconventional?
Looking at this video compared to others by Gaga, it is quiet conventional in terms of what is expected of her and her style. On the other hand, this video is very unconventional for pop music and features a lot of strange images including alien and ghost like beings.

Who is being represented?
The music video mainly represents elderly men and women. The majority of people in this video are white although there are a few black people being represented.

How are they being represented?
The people in the video are being represented as mischievous and rebellious for their age. Examples of this include smacking a horse with a whip made from tinsel.

What is the impact and message of this?
The impact of this is that the stereotypical idea that older people are weak and unable to do much is being challenged by their troublesome behavior.

What are the binary opposites in this video?
One binary opposite that could be talked about in this video is the genre of music in contrast with the age of the performers. Typically, older people would not be associated with genres such as electronic music.

Is the video conventional or unconventional?
This video is conventional for the electronic music genre because it is slightly strange but not so much so that it would be abnormal for the style of music.

Who is being represented?
In this music video the people being represented are men and women from Asia. They appear to be both old and young but mostly from a working class background.

How are they being represented?
In my opinion, the way that the people's eyes are moving and being distorted could be a way of representing how Asian governments control their media and how their people view the country, thus warping the people's ideologies.

What is the impact and message of this?
The impact of this message could help people to think more about the choices the government has made and the effects they have.

What are the binary oppositions in this video?
The binary oppositions in this are the strange way that everyone is acting around the main character of the video compared to the confusion he is displaying.

Is this video conventional or unconventional?
This video is unconventional and uses several simple changes to the actor's faces in order to make an extremely weird music video that stands out from other house music.

Who is being represented?
The person being represented in this music video is Katy Perry and her overall style and brand.

How are they being represented?
She is making herself into a sexual object and allowing men to "cook" her however they want. One way in which she sexualises herself by wearing very little skin coloured clothing, implying that she is naked.

Impact and message of this?
The impact of this message could suggest that Katy Perry wants to be objectified and made into a sexual object for men to watch.

What are the binary opposites in this video?
A binary opposite that can be found towards the end of the video is the contrast between the violence of the guests being tied up compared to the soft way that Perry is dancing among the pink smoke.

Is the video conventional or unconventional?
This pop music video is conventional for the artist and the genre's style. This is because Katy Perry, who is one of very few women shown in the video, has been used as a sexual object for the enjoyment of men.

Who is being represented?
The people being represented in this video are those who have recently broken up with their partner and are trying to get revenge for the undoing of the relationship.

How are they being represented?
The way that they are being represented shows that they are trying to improve themselves by getting on with their lives and moving on from their ex as a way of showing them what they were leaving behind when they broke it off.

Impact and message of this?
The impact of this is that the viewer's feel empowered by Pink's way of dealing with her recent break up. This has been used to make the audience feel that they don't need to dwell on it and lets them see that the best revenge is taking care of yourself.

What are the binary opposites in the video?
One binary opposite I found in the video was the newly married couple in a car pulling up next to Pink on her motorcycle while she sings about a break up. The contrast of this has been used to antagonize Pink and makes her lash out at them, attempting to wreck their car.

Is the video conventional or unconventional?
The music is conventional for the song's pop rock style of music. The video is conventional because it shows Pink wrecking everything that she can gets her hands on such as a new guitar and the newly wed's car.

Who is being represented?
The music video represents the sailors on board the Titanic.

How are they being represented?
The sailors are being represented as people who like to party and have fun. As well as this the sailors seem to have the reputation of chasing girls and using their "sex appeal" to make them more interested.

Impact and message of this?
The impact of this messages makes the audience think that they can't be trusted because they drink a lot and want to chase after girls all the time.

What are the binary opposites in the video?
One of the binary opposites that could be found in the music video is the representation of the sailors compared to how we would expect them to act. The sailors portrayed in the music video seem irresponsible because they drink too much and are more interested in chasing girls than doing their job. In contrast to this, many people think that sailors should be responsible for the boat they are in charge of and focus more on that than on girls and parties.

Is the video conventional or unconventional?
The music video is conventional for the Euro-dance genre. This is because the video is very animated and contains strange dances as well as animal puppets and bizarre characters being portrayed by the singers in the band.
