Representation

What is representation?
The ways in which the media portrays particular groups, communities, experiences, ideas, or topics from a particular ideological or value perspective.

The roles of women in Humans:

  • Mother
  • Caregiver
  • Prostitute
  • Maid
  • Butler
  • Friend
  • Slave
  • Rebel
Madonna/Whore Complex
The inability to maintain sexual arousal within a committed, loving relationship. First identified by Sigmund Freud, under the rubric of psychic impotence, this psychological complex is said to develop in men who see women as either saintly Madonnas or debased prostitutes. Men with this complex desire a sexual partner who has been degraded (the whore) while they cannot desire the respected partner (the Madonna). Freud wrote: "Where such men love they have no desire and where they desire they cannot love."

Sigmund freud developed a theory to explain men's anxiety towards women's sexuality. suggesting that men define women into on of two categories: The Madonna (women he admirers and respects) and the Whore (women he is attracted to and therefore disrespects).
  • The Madonna is typically virtuous, nurturing, saintly, and sexually repressed.
  • The whore is sensual, sexualised, and desirable without purity.

What representations of gender are encoded in the scenes?
Women are seen and used as sexual objects. This is evident in the scene with the synth who is working as a prostitute. On the flip side, the families teenage daughter is seen watching an interview about the synths as she tries to better understand how they work. This is a representation of women being smart and working within STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Maths).

What functions do the male and female bodies serve? How do you know?
Female synths have been sexualised and used by men to gain sexual gratification. Where as the human females have not ben sexualised and are treated as well respected members of the community.  Male bodies of both synths and human have not been widely represented in the show. However, it can be said that the dad of the house is not comfortable doing the jobs around the house when the mother is away. Instead he resorts to buying a female synth to do it for him.

Zoella- Audience (Clay Shirky- End Of An Audience)

Zoella- Audience Zoella's target audience: Gender: Female Age: 7-13 Ethnicity: White, English Social-economic status: Middle class Zoella does not have a mass audience as she targets a niche audience, a specific group of people.  Emotive content- the show appeals to its female audience through narratives that engage with subject matter emotionally. Zoella continuously tells us how she 'feels' about the problems she faces. Zoella foregrounds stereotypical female based activities in her presentation: fashion, make-up, relationships. Costume stereotypically feminine- feminine colour palette deployed in mise-en-scene use of pets and pet orientated references (stereotypical little dog). Presenter constructs a version of ideal beauty- highly stylised, lot of make-up, attention pain to outfits. Intimate confessional tone- creates a female character. A quiet/ passive presentation style that fits with the target audience's expectations and female pres...

Mock Exam Questions

Past Paper Questions. https://lr-media.blogspot.com/2018/10/key-assessment-one.html Long Road mock exam January 2018 A-level media studies key assessment 1 Time allowed – 90 minutes Please answer BOTH questions. Component 1A – Media language and representation Media language Making reference to the Kiss of the Vampire poster and the Tide advert, explore the ways in which media language incorporates viewpoints and ideologies. You must consider: • How meaning is created through intertextuality or referential codes • How audiences may respond to and interpret media language • The potential multiple meanings of these adverts   [30] This poster, from Kiss Of The Vampire, depicts two vampires, one male and one female, attacking two people while bats fly behind them. In the poster we can see a perfect example of Richard Dyer's theory of stereotypes which states that: Stereotypes are used in media products as a short cut for producers who want to repre...

Albert Bandura- Hypodermic Needle Theory

The  Hypodermic needle theory  is a linear communication  theory  that suggests that media messages are injected directly into the brains of passive audiences. In Nazi Germany in the 1930's and during World War 2 films were used to 'inject' propaganda ideas promoting the Nazi cause to the German audience. To what extent does Assassins Creed III: Liberation present a threat to the audience both targeted and secondary?  The target audience will be used to the violent images seen in the game because they are usually loyal fans to the brand and will have played similar games before. where as the secondary audience might not be as used to the violence because they have not played games similar to this before. The Bobo Doll Experiment The doll that was used in the experiment was intended to be hit and bounce back up again which could suggest that the toy is supposed to be hit and kicked by the children and they were simply being playful rather than violent. ...
